The use and effects of opiates (e.g. heroin), stimulants (e.g. meth), and alcohol have become a major problem and concern on Native American reservations. There are reports of increasing cases infant cardiac abnormalities, cleft lip and palate in newborns, and biliary atresia (liver abnormalities in infants). Coupled with an estimated 175% increase in use of opiates, stimulants and alcohol by young Native American women during and after birth, this is an unacceptable situation. All Tribes need to address this crisis, and do so immediately. It should be noted that the reported infant problems are only those that are easily detected. It is unknown the long term and unseen consequences of substance abuse by child bearing women to their children.
